Mindfulness
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is bringing awareness to whatever is happening within you and around you in this moment.
More about mindfulness
Initiatives inclusive of the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program developed Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical Centre connect Buddhist psychology and Western approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Mindfulness encapsulates the simple yet rare ability to be present within ourselves in the now, rather than perpetually replaying our past, or inefficaciously projecting ourselves into the future. It can provide you with a life approach that facilitates the growth and nurturing of inner resilience and stability.
Shifting the focus of our attention to our breath enables us to dismiss irrelevant distractions to remain anchored or return to the present moment. Learning mindfulness can provide a means of reconnecting to our true selves, whilst realigning to a more appropriate pace of living. Subsequently, life transitions are interpreted as less threatening, alleviating emotions and symptoms typically synonymous with Stress, Anxiety, and Depression.
Patients are increasingly being referred by their doctors and consultants on a global scale towards the practice of mindfulness, to support, rather than replace, their current talk therapy or medication treatment plans. Millions of people around the world practice mindfulness to enhance their experience of living. Put simply, mindfulness involves continually returning your awareness to your present-moment stream of experience in a non-judgmental way. This very simple approach, though at odds with our normal way of thinking, has been extensively researched, and shown to help with a vast array of issues.
