Relationship Counselling, Family Therapy & Conflict Management
Relationship Counselling
Many long term relationships come under strain at some stage often leading to increased conflict and impacting negatively in areas of trust, intimacy and sex.
Further common reasons for relationship breakdowns:
- Feelings of drifting apart
- Poor Communication
- Parental Issues
- Addiction Problems
- Infidelity and Commitment Issues
- Money Pressures
- Uneven distribution of domestic duties
Given that the nature of my work with couples is largely facilitative, you can be assured that my role is not to take sides or make judgements about who is right or wrong. Additionally I do not instruct, or offer opinions about whether couples should stay together or to separate. However I do provide a safe and neutral space for family members or couples to acknowledge what their relationship has become, to review how this happened, and to appraise the meaning of change for the relationship. Established patterns of communication and conflict resolution will be assessed together to evaluate preferred approaches and outcomes.
Specifically counselling may enable couples to:
- Comprehend the dynamics of their present relationship
- Explore and rediscover their initial mutual attraction
- Identify their goals and needs from their relationship and from each other
- Identify and take responsibility for their individual and collective contributions to the relationship
- Generate regular and healthy communication patterns
- Express their current feelings about each other
- Investigate the various options available to improve their relationship
Counselling for Separating/Divorcing Couples
Going through a separation and/or divorce can be a long and emotionally draining process. Feelings of grief, anger, guilt, sadness and resentment can be so intense and overwhelming that they literally inhibit access to joy, fun, or normality in everyday life. Counselling offers support in dealing with these feelings in order to gain clarity, acceptance and alternative perspectives about your life in the now and in the future. You may benefit from working through your separation with someone without a vested interest in the outcome.
Common areas examined include:
- How relationships change
- How to bear and manage grief
- The true impact of anger
- Pathways to acceptance
- Potential pathways for the separation
- Learning to be single
- Considering new relationships
Although some people struggle during the course and aftermath of a break up, it is possible to move on and to be happy again whether you choose to do this alone or with someone else.
Family Therapy
Every family continuously develops and evolves as the children, adolescents and adults that inhabit it grow and change also. Family therapy assumes that the behaviour of individuals is influenced and maintained by interactions with other members of the family system. Effective family therapy addresses faulty processes within the family system to permit its members to experience real, permanent and positive change. The family roles, rules, goals, and stages of development typically reveal the sources of conflict and stress.
Family Therapy provides a forum for:
- Open communication between parents, adolescents and children
- Alternative strategies to diminish domestic conflict
- Genuine exploration and consideration of others perspectives
- Viable coping skills for major transitions such as divorce and remarriage
Family Therapy may address:
- Anger issues
- Blended families
- Challenging behaviours
- Communication Styles
- Conflict Resolution
- Divorce/Separation/Break ups
- Drug or Alcohol Abuse
- Education and/or School Refusal
- Financial stress and emotional implications
- Grief and Loss
- Living with Illness/Disability
- Mental Health Issues (Depression, Anxiety etc)
- Parent-adolescent relationships
- Parent-child relationships
- Parenting
- PTSD
- Self-esteem
- Sexuality-Related Issues
- Step-parenting
- Unemployment Issues
Individuals and numbers of 2 or more may attend weekly family therapy sessions which have a 50 minute duration. Those attending will be agreed with myself in advance of the appointment and my cancellation policy also applies.
Relationship Counselling & Family Therapy Fees
Individuals €60
Couples €75
Families (groups of 3 or more) €100
Some form of conflict is likely to exist wherever there are people interacting. It is not humanly possible to agree on everything and it wouldn’t make for a very interesting world if we all held identical beliefs, attitudes and values. However conflict becomes especially unhealthy when one or both parties experience a sense of injustice and when the conflict remains unresolved. Frustration is a frequent feature of such conflict blinding the parties in dispute to the avenues of potential resolution. Through its nature and causality interpersonal conflict can be categorised as follows:
- Conflict in the workplace
- Conflict in personal and intimate relationships
- Conflict in the family
- Conflict in groups
- Conflict at societal and international level
Having varied and extensive experience within a number of roles as a group facilitator and trainer, I am available to facilitate conflict management and resolution processes in the above areas. Please enquire about specific rates for conflict management and resolution processes in the workplace.
